Creative communication - appreciation of desired tone

The tone will help the audience appreciate and like the ident. For example, if a comedy channel had a serious tone to their ident then it would annoy the viewers as they are looking for a comedic tone.

Creative communication - appealing to a target audience

TV channels can appeal to their audience by having celebrity endorsements to attract their audiences. This is effective because they have a celebrity that can relate to the channel.

Limtation Aspect Ratio

This is simply how people view a TV channel on their screen. When a screen goes from 16:9 to a 4:3 there is no change. However when the ident is created this source but then is shown on a 16:9 monitor it has pillars ever side.

Limitations Size

When creating TV idents it is important to consider the size of peoples TV screens. The most common aspect ratio is 16:9, which is the standard HDTV format. However TV channels tend to keep their information smaller than that in a 'safe area' as people may have older TV's.

Limitations Colour

This is probaly one of the most important factors when creating an indent as you have to incorporate the channel colors into it, these colors depend on the target audience of the TV channel. For example, a childrens channel will incorporate simple and bright colours. On the other hand a channel like BBC one will use red and black as they are a corporate TV channel.

Limitations - Resolution

TV idents are limited sometimes due to what the viewers have at home in terms of technology. For example idents will look better if the costumer themselves have a 4K TV. On the other hand, someone with a box TV will be limited as the technology is outdated and can't handle the high quality.

Creative communication - creating under pressure of time and budget

Time
A TV channel main problem is time, depending on the agreement they have in place will dictate how long they have to create the ident. For example, you might have to put your new ident out with the release of a new TV show. The example I went for is E4's release of their robot mascot eefer as this was released with the series of Big Bang Theory. The rush can limit a designers creativity as they are under pressure all the time.

Budget
The other main problem that TV channels may face is the budget as this dictates what you can do creatively. For example if you were a small channle then you would have less money to work with rather than a bigger channel. Smaller channels can compete with this by being more humorous than visually appeasing.

Creative communication - Communicationg visual ideas to a nonvisual audience

A channel has multiple ways in which they can communicate visual ideas to a non visual audience by using characters and seasonal events. The example I went for is the sky sports 1 season ident with the snowmen playing football the reason why is because it had a comedy element with a snowman missing a head which the usual idents do not include.

Creative Communication - pushing the technology

The availability of new technology allows channels now to show their creativity where as years ago it wasn't available which limited a channels creativity. The example I went for is the old sky sports logo vs the new in the old one it was a basic background with the logo on it but now for the football they show they have idents which involve a football game to give the audience a feel of realism. The technology today allows sky to do this.

Limitations: Analogue and digital recording and transmission systems

Digital and analogue are very similar systems but the main difference being that digital can be compressed so that no noise can be heard. analogue is a binary system whereas digital is all 0s and 1s. This would effect an ident as digital would have better sound for the ident. Analogue sound can be heard with a vinyl record where as digital has no noise.

Creative Communication - enhancing the ideas

Once a ident is first shown to the audience it can surprise them. However, they will eventually want more. The example I went for was Dave old ident which was quite subtle with the bright colours but people didn't think that the ident best reflected the tagline of the channel, which was "the home of witty banter" So Dave in response to this changed their ident to a golf caddy on a golf course but one is a toy buggy being held down by the weight of the golf clubs. This supported their tagline as golf is a serius sport but this ident showed Dave's banter.

Limitations: Typograhy

External companies that want to use a channel to advertise are limited because they have to use the house fonts that are used by the channel. The reason why the channel stick to this is to encourage brand loyalty. The first example I went for is BBC three family guy ident as the font of family guy is completely different from the BBC font but they had to change it to keep to house colors.

Encouragement of Brand Loyalty

Idents will always try to encourage brand loyalty by repeating themselves and getting the audience involved, it is usually the better the involvement then the greater the audience will recieve the channel. The example I went for is BT Sport as they are the only channel that shows every Champions League game. This encourages loyalty of football fans as this is the only place you can watch champions league football without going across Europe.

Appeal to target audience

The channel I will be looking at to see how they appeal to target audiences will be ITV2. The target audience of ITV2 is adults aged 16 to 34, this is shown in their ident with the people playing with some fans and a balloon. This is aimed at their target audience because there young and there are bright colors.

Opportunities: Creation of Tone

One of the benefits of creating your own channel is that you can have your own ethos or ideology, one way you can promote this is by reflecting it on your channel ident. A serious tone will attract a more mature audience whereas a more entertainment based ident will attract a younger audience. The tone can be achieved with the linguistic register this includes things such as the choice of colors you employ.

Serious Tone
The serious tone channel I went for to use as my example is the BBC 4 ident which appeals to a older audience this ident in particular was used for the older generation that watch the nature show that was scheduled next.

Laid Back Tone
The example I went for is BBC three's ident. The target audience for BBC three is younger than BBC four so this allows them to use more bright colors and have a lot more going on, this keeps the younger audience engaged and keeps them watching their channel.

Opportunities: Branding of Content

This is the idea that channels are known for the shows they broadcast. This simply when a channel includes a show that they air to appeal more to viewers. The purpose of this is to establish brand loyalty between the channels and shows. For example if the audience like the show you are broadcasting then you can keep them watching by including the characters on screen with the ident. An example of a channel that does it is the BBC.

Example: ITV2 & Love Island
The reason why I chose this as a example is because it is their most popular show and advertising them keeps their viewers loyal to the show. This particular example is effective as they used this ident a couple of weeks before it started, loyal viewers of the show will recognize that this is the villa from the show, so when they first showed this ident it created a sense of excitement for their audience as they new that their favorite show is coming back.

Opportunities: Display of Text-based Information

In TV this is when a channel uses information on their idents to give information to the audience. However some information can only be shown visually as channels have to cater to all types of audiences. For example, if they announce the schedule then people who have a hearing disability will not hear this and therefore not know what is on TV.

Preffered Reading
This is when a channel gets it right and it caters to all types of audiences. The example I went for is film 4 ident before the movie as it visually shows what is on next for the hearing impaired as well as enouces it for people who are visually impaired.

Opporsitional
The example I went for is the BBC two ident as it only announces what is on next so this does not appeal to everyone as they might not be able to hear it.

Opportunities: Creation of Corporate Identity

This in simple terms is when a TV Channel decides how to present themselves to their audience. This is a primary task and usually the communications department responsibility to manage and maintain the companies image as well as how it fits into the companies image. In general terms, an ident includes the following

  • Logo - eg. Logotype or Logogram.
  • Guidelines - Palettes, typefaces and layouts.
Oppositional
This is when a channel gets their ident completely wrong and it goes against their ethos and it just becomes boring. The example I went for is More4's generic ident. The reason why I disagree with this is because it goes against their corporate identity which is to entertain people. The reason why this ident is boring is because it is just the more 4 logo going back and forth in a transition, the result of this was two long and since it is seen as a entertainment channel it just left people bored.

Prefered Reading
This is when a channel gets their ident right and it completely goes with their corporate identity. The example I went for is Dave's Bowling ident as in this short clip it reflects their tagline which is 'witty banter.' In this clip it looks serious as the shot has a bunch of bowls but then someone roles in a hamster ball into it. The effect of this was that it surprised audiences and also got a laugh out of it.
